My 3-year old loves the idea of taking pictures, but is frustrated by the hard-to-push shutter button, so quickly loses interest, preferring instead to manipulate the buttons in the back. I wish the power button was as hard to press as the shutter. We'd find it a much more enjoyable experience.
Picture quality is what you'd expect from a camera suitable for the pre-k set, and it is very tough. If something happened to it, I would do a lot more real-world testing before buying a different model or brand.
